Changi Water Reclamation Plant opens officially on 23rd June 2009
Singapore's largest and most advanced used water treatment facility, the Changi Water Reclamation Plant (Changi WRP) will be officially opened by Prime Minister, Mr Lee Hsien Loong, on 23 June 2009 in conjunction with the second Singapore International Water Week.

The heart of the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS), Singapore's superhighway for used water management, the Changi WRP ensures the sustainability of NEWater, Singapore's own brand of high-grade reclaimed water.

Comprising a 48-km long tunnel with depths ranging from 20 m to 50 m, a 5 km sea outfall and link sewers, the DTSS diverts used water from the eastern, northern and central parts of Singapore by gravity to the Changi WRP.  The Changi WRP is able to treat 800,000 cubic metres (176 million gallons) of used water a day.

The large-scale collection of used water for treatment and further reclamation at one centralised plant brings about economies of scale and enables Singapore to free up valuable land for other economic use.  In addition, the Changi WRP is the first plant in the world to house a NEWater plant on top of its liquid treatment module. This compact design is crucial in land-scarce Singapore. When completed in 2010, the Changi NEWater factory will produce 228,000 cubic metres (50 million gallons) of highly purified reclaimed water daily, tapping on treated used water from the Changi WRP as its feedwater.

The main driver behind these milestone projects is PUB, Singapore’s national water agency, which manages the entire water cycle from sourcing to collection, purification and supply of drinking water. Over the last 40 years, the water agency has built a robust and diversified water supply strategy known as the Four National Taps (local catchment water, imported water, NEWater and desalinated water) through investments in research and technology.
