A Joint session from the Singapore International Water Week, World Cities Summit and CleanEnviro Summit Singapore

Theme: Sustainable Development – Our City, Water and the Environment

More than half the world's population is living in towns and cities nowadays, and the trend towards urbanisation is accelerating. According to the estimate by UN-Habitat, two thirds of the global population would be living in urban environments by 2040. While cities have become engines of growth for developing countries and a magnet for people seeking better economic opportunities, global trends such as climate change, increased industrial and transport activities, and rising expectations of public service delivery are all exacting enormous pressures on our urban infrastructure, and straining the world's environment and natural resources.

Increasing global population and rapid urbanisation continue to put a strain on our water resources. According to the UN, as of 2010, it is estimated that 884 million people lack access to safe drinking water and a total of more than 2.6 billion people do not have access to basic sanitation.

All these challenges emphasize on the importance of having liveable and sustainable cities, with a safe, reliable and affordable supply of water, and a clean environment.

At the Joint Opening Plenary, high level speakers from the government, industry and international organisation sectors will be invited to share on their respective role in creating a liveable and sustainable city.

The session will be Chaired by Prof Tommy Koh, Ambassador-at-large, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore and Chairperson, Water Leaders Summit

TIME PROGRAMME
3 Jul 11, Tuesday (Day 2 of Water Leaders Summit)
0830h Tea & Coffee
0900h "The Water Leaders Roundtable" (Organised in partnership with the International Desalination Association)

Theme: "Water Planning for Liveable and Sustainable Cities"

In recent years, continuous urbanization and economic growth has led to an increase in the demand for resources such as water, energy, food, land, financial capital etc. With increased competition on our limited resources, coupled with uncertainties in the world's economic condition and climate change, it has become clear that the "business-as-usual" water planning approach may no longer be adequate. For water planning to be sustainable, an integrated approach taking into the account the various constraints and balancing these competing needs is required.

In line with the theme of "Water Solutions for Liveable and Sustainable Cities" of SIWW, the Water Leaders Summit Roundtable will look into some of the successful examples of sustainable and integrated water planning in cities (e.g. "eco-cities" such as Tianjin, Masdar). The panelists will share insights and learning points from these case studies, and also discuss on some of the challenges and consideration in the planning and design of water-centric cities.

  • Khoo Teng Chye, Executive Director, Centre for Liveable Cities
