Assistant Commissioner and Acting Chief Information Officer, NYC Department of Environmental Protection

Michael Shum is the Assistant Commissioner/Acting Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the Bureau of Business Information Technology (BIT) at the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). DEP is the largest combined water and wastewater utility in the United States, delivering and treating over one billion gallons of water to over 9.6 million New Yorkers every day.

As Assistant Commissioner/Acting CIO, Michael coordinates and implements strategic projects and helps define the mission, goals, and objectives of the BIT. Michael oversees the development of agency-wide information technology, innovation, information resource standards, and governance processes. Additionally, Michael provides subject matter expertise on cybersecurity, advanced technologies, project management, organizational development, and business management processes.

Michael also serves on the New York City Technology Forum Advisory Board and has been a featured speaker at industry events, offering his expertise on the fusion of government, people, and technology. Michael is a mentor to emerging technology professionals and strongly believes in preparing the next generation to lead.

Michael received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Northwood University and a Master of Science from Pace University. Before joining the DEP, Michael worked in the IT, Education, and Fashion industries.
