Dr. ir. Gerhard M. van den Top currently serves as Mayor of the Dutch City of Hilversum. For nearly 3 decades before assuming this role in the Netherlands, he pursued an international scientific and managerial career in the field of sustainable water- and natural resource management.

His working experience in this field involves, among others, long and short term assignments in several African and Asian countries, a 5 year resident coordinator role of an international academic research programme in the Philippines, followed by an international leadership position in the field of urban water and sanitation, and then by the chairmanship of the Amsterdam-based Regional Water Authority.

Dr. van den Top also serves on the Board of Trustees of Deltares, the Netherlands’ leading research and knowledge institution in the field of water and subsurface. In his role as Mayor, dr. van den Top sits in the Netherlands’ National Security Council and, on behalf of this body, represents the national information management and cybersecurity portfolio.

Dr. van den Top is married and father of 2 teenage children.
