Academician
Chinese Academy of Engineering, Civil, Hydraulic and Architecture Engineering Division
China

Ma Jun, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) in the Division of Civil, Hydraulic and Architectural Engineering, is an expert in water treatment and resource recovery. He currently serves as a Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) and concurrently holds the position of Director of the National Engineering Research Center for Urban Water Resources Development and Utilization (North China). He is also a Fellow of the International Water Association (IWA), Vice President of the China Urban Water Association, and a member of the expert group for the urban water environment management direction of the National "Water Pollution Control and Treatment" Major Science and Technology Project ("Water Special Project").

Academician Ma Jun's core research focuses on water treatment, where his innovative technologies provide critical support for the safe disposal of solid waste leachate and hazardous waste control in "Zero-Waste Cities". He pioneered the development of core processes such as catalytic ozonation and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), enabling the efficient degradation of persistent toxic pollutants in landfill leachate and hazardous waste, thus overcoming challenges in treating high-concentration organic wastewater.

He led the establishment of a comprehensive treatment technology system for landfill leachate based on advanced treatment processes, significantly reducing the risk of groundwater contamination from landfill sites. He participated in formulating technical specifications for the national "Zero-Waste City" pilot program, proposing solutions for the co-treatment and resource recovery of organic hazardous waste. He has presided over more than 20 major research projects, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Innovative Research Group Project and the National High-Tech R&D Program (863 Program).

As the first completer, he was awarded the National Technology Invention Award (Second Class) twice (in 2002 and 2019) and the National Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Class) once (in 2010), and is also the first Chinese recipient of the "Global Water Award for Sustainability". He holds over 120 authorized invention patents, and his technologies have been applied in leachate treatment projects at more than 300 waste treatment plants, including the Beijing Asuwei plant, thereby ensuring the environmental safety of urban solid waste disposal.
