Ma Jun, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, is a distinguished expert in water treatment and resource recovery. He holds the position of the Professor at the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) and serves as the Director of the National Engineering Research Center for Urban Water Resources Development and Utilization (North China). In addition, he is a Fellow of the International Water Association (IWA), Vice President of the China Urban Water Association.
Dr. Ma Jun's research specializes in water treatment, developing innovative technologies that are crucial for safe solid waste leachate disposal and hazardous waste control in support of "Zero-Waste Cities". He has pioneered core processes including catalytic ozonation and advanced oxidation, enabling efficient degradation of persistent toxic pollutants in landfill leachate and overcoming key challenges in treating high-concentration organic wastewater.
He has led the establishment of a comprehensive treatment system for landfill leachate, substantially reducing groundwater contamination risks. Dr. Ma also contributed to national technical specifications for "Zero-Waste City" pilots, proposing integrated solutions for co-treatment and resource recovery of organic hazardous waste. Having presided over more than 20 major research projects, he has been honored as principal investigator with two National Technology Invention Awards (Second Class) and one National Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Class). He is the first Chinese scholar to receive the "Global Water Award for Sustainability" and holds over 120 invention patents, with technologies applied in more than 300 waste treatment plants.
