United States of America

Professor Jean J. M. Fréchet is Emeritus Professor of Chemistry, Chemical and Biological Engineeting at the University of California, Berkeley. Born in France, Jean Fréchet obtained a Chemical Engineering degree in Lyon, France, then completed his doctoral studies in organic and polymer chemistry at the State University of New York and Syracuse University.

He joined the Chemistry Faculty at the University of Ottawa in Canada in 1973 and remained there until 1987 when he became IBM Professor of Polymer Chemistry at Cornell University. In 1995, he was named the Peter J. Debye Chair of Chemistry at Cornell. In 1997, Professor Fréchet joined the Chemistry Faculty at the University of California, Berkeley and was named the Henry Rapoport Chair of Organic Chemistry in 2003. Concurrently, he was the Scientific Director of the Organic and Macromolecular Facility for the Molecular Foundry, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Frechet also served as Senior Vice President for Research and Economic Development at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Saudi Arabia until 2019.

Fréchet’s scientific output includes about 900 publicaions in scholarly journals, 200 patents, and several start-up companies. At the interface between organic and polymer chemistry, his research focused on the broad area of nanoscience and nanotechnology, directed largely on functional macromolecules, their design, synthesis, and applications.

A member of the US National Academy of Science, the US National Academy of Engineering and the Academy of Europe, Frechet is the recipient of numerous international awards and multiple honorary doctorates.
