Mark Fletcher

Global Water Business Leader, Arup

Mark currently leads the Global Water Business in Arup. He became an Arup Fellow in 2017, an Honorary Fellow of the Society for the Environment in 2018 and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2019. He is also Chair of the Water Industry Forum, Leadership Council Member of UK Water Partnership and Board Member for British Water.

A global thought leader in water, he has specific interests in nature-based solutions, city water resilience, sustainable flood risk management and governance across the water cycle. He was Faculty Lead for the Programme on ‘Resilience of Urban Systems’ run by Arup University and Sloan Management School at MIT and has worked with regulators, public and private water companies and environmental agencies around the world for over 34 years. He is on the Organising Committee for Singapore International Water Week and is actively involved in supporting Young Water Professionals at Stockholm World Water Week.


Presentation Synopsis

Global Best Practise in Coastal Resilience
In a post COP26 world the importance of coastal resilience has never been greater. This presentation will provide an overview of sustainable coastal resilience management through global best practice including examples from China, USA, UK. It will cover the emerging need to embrace nature-based solutions and how they reduce the need for residual grey infrastructure. It will also provide a conceptual approach to assessing resilience of low-lying coastal cities in a rigorous and consistent way.
