Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI)
NTU’s Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI) is a leading research and technology organization supporting national and sectoral priorities in water, waste, and environmental systems. Its technical capabilities span Biotechnology and Bioprocesses, Membrane Technologies, Chemicals and Materials, Resource Recovery, and Modeling and Artificial Intelligence. These integrated competencies develop applied solutions for water circularity, sustainable waste management, circular economy, resource recovery, climate resilience, for the environmental infrastructure.
NEWRI’s urban environmental solutions encompass advanced membrane systems, energy-efficient desalination processes, autonomous and smart water treatment technologies, sludge treatment and valorization, waste-to-resource pathways, carbon capture and decarbonization strategies, and the detection and mitigation of greenhouse gases and emerging contaminants. Data-driven approaches, including environmental AI and machine learning, are applied to enhance process monitoring, control, and operational efficiency across treatment systems.
Our research is underpinned by a wide ranging and comprehensive analytical facilities and infrastructure, led by a dedicated analytics team. These capabilities enable detailed process characterization and performance evaluation, with technologies advanced through engineering design, pilot-scale validation, and field deployment to achieve industry-relevant implementation by co-creating holistic environmental engineering solutions.
NEWRI works closely with industry partners, funding agencies, and philanthropic organizations to translate research outcomes into deployable solutions with commercial and societal impact. Collaboration models include joint development with multinational corporations, local enterprises, SMEs, and startups, supporting technology scale-up, demonstration, and commercialization.
Aligned with Nanyang Technological University’s strategic objectives, NEWRI continues to expand its technical portfolio and applied impact, with a focus on delivering robust, scalable environmental engineering solutions and developing skilled talent for the water and environmental sectors.
